Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Donald C. Winter, spoke at the Cupertino Veterans Memorial on Veterans Day 2007.  The bronze statue was made in the likeness of and dedicated to Navy SEAL Sonar Technician 2nd Class Matthew Axelson who was killed in action with other members of his team during Operation Redwing in Afghanistan in June 2005.  In attendance was, Corky and Donna Axelson, Matthew's parents; Cindy Axelson, Matthew's wife; Rear Admiral Joseph Kernan and Lt. Commander C. S. Dudley.
